Shikakai

Acacia concinna

Shikakai (Acacia concinna), whose name means fruit for hair, is a climbing shrub from the Indian subcontinent whose pods have been used as a natural shampoo since the days of the Charaka and Sushruta Samhita. Rich in gentle natural saponins, it cleanses hair and scalp with a soft lather and a low pH that lifts away dirt and oil without stripping the hair's natural moisture. Sourced single-origin and milled into a pure, additive-free powder, it is made for external hair and scalp use.

Frequently asked questions

Shikakai, whose name means fruit for hair, is one of India's oldest natural hair cleansers, made from the dried pods of the Acacia concinna shrub. It works as a gentle, plant-based alternative to shampoo, traditionally used to cleanse the scalp, soften and detangle the hair, and bring out natural shine. It is mixed into a paste or wash and rinsed out, suiting most hair types.
Mix two to three tablespoons with warm water into a smooth paste, or soak and strain it into a herbal wash. Apply it to wet hair, massage gently into the scalp and lengths, leave for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Used once or twice a week, it cleanses beautifully in place of shampoo.
It does lather, but gently. Shikakai contains natural saponins that produce a soft, mild foam rather than the heavy suds of commercial shampoo. That lighter lather is exactly the point, as it cleans away dirt and oil without stripping the hair of its natural moisture.
Yes, it suits most hair types and is gentle enough for sensitive scalps, which is why it has been loved for generations. Very dry or chemically treated hair may enjoy it most when paired with a nourishing oil, or with amla and reetha. As with anything new, a quick patch test first is always sensible.
Thanks to its naturally low pH, shikakai is much gentler than regular shampoo and does not strip away the oils your hair needs. If your hair leans dry, simply mix it with aloe vera gel, yoghurt or a little oil, or follow with a light conditioner. Most people find their hair feels clean but still soft and grounded.
Shikakai has long been a favourite for fuller, healthier-looking hair, as keeping the scalp clean and roots strong creates the ideal base for hair to thrive. Used regularly, it is traditionally valued to cleanse the scalp, strengthen roots and reduce everyday breakage. Results build gradually, so consistent weekly use works best.
Yes, do a patch test on your skin before the first full wash, as natural plant powders can occasionally cause sensitivity. Importantly, keep the paste well away from your eyes, as the natural saponins can sting like soap. Avoid using it on broken or irritated skin, and rinse well if any gets in the eyes.
Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Use a clean, dry spoon so the powder stays fresh and free-flowing. Slight variation in shade between batches is normal for a pure, single-origin pod powder.
